    Change in Direction


    2009 - 10.27

    The team leader for my Games Development modules is finally back and it’s about time too, he’s not even met two of the group members. We were missing three team members again this week but I’m not annoyed at that. We actually managed to come up with a few designs at last after changing the games style from cartoon-y to quite grim (an idea we think works much better).

    My project supervisor finally emailed me back with a meeting time. If he hadn’t done so I would have emailed him again but would have been less polite this time. I’ll finally see if my project is on the right scale, something which I have been worried about for quite a while.

    I’ve also been kicking ass at Saints Row 2, I managed to get the Crime Lord achievement for completing all the activities (Hitman and the races don’t count towards it). I also did all the Samdi missions and the extra one with Dex. I also did the streaking ;)

    2009 - 10.24

    I discovered yesterday that my car had been leaking oil. Before I left for uni I popped the bonnet and discovered that the oil had completely ran out, if I’d drove it in the engine could have exploded. This morning I took it in to a garage to get it looked at and apparently the pressure gage for the oil was broken. It was replaced and was really cheap, the garage even topped her up with new oil.

    Today was also my uncle Daves 50th birthday. Me, my parents, Simon and the idiot all drove down to Snape where my uncle lives. My three cousins from London and my aunt and uncle from there all came up to see him too. It was the biggest family gathering since my cousin Victoria’s wedding a month or two back (which me and my parents weren’t able to attend). Luckily I’ll be able to see them all again, unfortunately it’ll be at Simon and the idiots wedding*. It was good night. I drove back alone on the night, the others had rooms at the pub. I must say that driving home on the A19 at night without any traffic to slow you down is great fun.

    Well I’m going to bed now, all that socialising and driving has knackered me out.

    * Please note that when I say the word “wedding” in this sentence I’m spitting the word out.

    Game Review: Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days


    2009 - 10.24

    Kingdom Hearts has made it’s second appearance on a handheld console in the recently released Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days on the DS. The games story doesn’t follow main series hero Sora but Roxas, the character you briefly (although not brief enough for some people) at the start of Kingdom Hearts 2. The story revolves around a year in which Roxas was a member of Organisation XIII which was only briefly alluded in KH2 and takes place between Kingdom Hearts 1 and 2. The plot is mainly filled with short story lines all of which resolve themselves fairly quickly but manage to flesh out the character of Roxas and a few other members of XIII. The events of KH: Chain of Memories are mentioned and play a significant role in the overall story of this game.

    The gameplay is great, the development team has managed to recreate the main series combat and control set up brilliantly. The camera control does suffer though without the use of an analog stick to control it. However the game offers you three alternate methods of control, it’s just a matter of picking which one works best for you. The story is mission based with you travelling to a number of the worlds repeatedly. Instead of giving you the ability to explore the full world, each mission has specific areas of each world that you can travel through and only towards the end of the game missions use all the areas available for a world. Mission themselves break down to being either: Investigate, kill a specific enemy, kill a certain amount of enemies or kill a specific amount of a certain enemy.

    The graphics are great for what you can do in 3D on the DS.  My game artist knowledge has picked up on a few things which they’ve done to save memory space on the graphics side of things, something I’ve been doing on games alot recently. The games music is good but doesn’t really stand out. The theme songs for both Kingdom Hearts 1 and 2 are used and it would have been nice if this game had it’s own theme music.

    The game itself is suprisingly long, taking me a good 30+ hours to finish the story and there’s quite a bit of replay value doing all the challenges and playing the mission mode. It may be a while before I finally do finish the game.

    The game is a gem and I certainly wasn’t expecting it to be as good as it turned out to be. If you love the Kingdom Hearts games then you’ll love this too and I definitely recommend getting it.

    2009 - 10.20

    We were told in our Games Dev lecture we have a presentation next week for our game concept. We’re really not ready for this. Hopefully we’ll get some help in the dev class which I have in about an hour.

    I had to take a break mid-post for a few minutes there because the fire alarm in the uni building went off. ¬__¬

    Nothing else has happened so far today, such a dull day. I’ve also changed the links on the side so my youtube channel is linked. Before anyone says, yes, I know I’m a big nerd.

    Uni, Life and 3rd Street Saints


    2009 - 10.18

    Uni is starting to pick up again. In advanced animation for games we’ve started learning how to do lip syncing for characters, good stuff. Games development is still a pain as we need to decide on an art style for the game and fast, we definitely need a team meeting after Tuesdays lecture. I had the most laid back drawing and composition lecture ever on Friday, the lecturers were looking at the pictures we did for the star sign/year sign. Nigel (one of the lecturers) said that the fish bowl shape as bad, which it is, but he liked the style I’d drawn some lines and then suggested other lines with the colours. I’m planning on using this style for the first part of the ICA they set. The project has kinda ground to a halt for the moment while the uni assigns us supervisors.

    Life in general is plodding along as usual. My parents are going away to Scotland tomorrow and will be away until Thursday. Simon and Jan are taking care of Danny at their house while they’re gone so I’m on my own. Strangely as I type this Yaz is talking to me on msn, she just messaged me out of the blue. She still types the way she talks.  ¬__¬

    Games wise I’m playing Saints Row 2 and Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days whenever I can get some free time to play, which isn’t as much as I’d like. *siiiiigh*

    Two Weeks Back


    2009 - 10.16

    Well it’s been two weeks since I returned to uni and gosh darn it almost a week since my last post. I’ve been given my ICA (In Course Assessment) for my Advanced Animation class and the first assignment on my Drawing and Composition 3 module. D&C was my least liked subject in first and second year but it doesn’t seem like it’s going to be as bad this year. In my Games Development lecture earlier this week the team was finalised with the addition of another animator (James) and a second second programmer (Dave). That gives us a team of seven, kind of. Shaun is off sick….with swine flu……yeah.

    Other than uni I’ve not been up to much. I’ve been neglecting reading the three books I got for Christmas and really need to get read. I found out there’s a new Discworld book out, woop. I bought Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days for the DS last Friday and I picked up a copy of Saints Row 2 today. Strangely a brand new copy worked out £7 cheaper than a second hand one. Like the big game geek I am I re-watched a few of the GameTrailers Retrospectives (which are really well made by the way) and I’ve started watching through Charlie Brooker’s Screenwipe on YouTube. I love that show.

    Game Review: Professor Layton and Pandora’s Box


    2009 - 10.10

    The good professor and his assistant Luke make their second outing in Professor Layton and Pandora’s Box. Layton receives a letter from his old mentor detailing the story of the Elysian Box. It is said to kill anyone who opens it and Layton’s mentor is supposed to be close to solving it’s mystery. His curiosity gets the better of him however and Layton and Luke find him dead and the box missing. It’s is now up to the duo find the box, uncover it’s mysteries and find the killer.

    Professor Layton and Pandora’s Box follows near identically the gameplay set in the previous game of the series, Professor Layton and the Curious Village. Everyone in the game will present you with puzzles for you to ponder and solve, some easy, some hard and some just cruel. The sequel takes what was set out before it and makes it a bit grander. There are more, all new, puzzles to solve (150+). The story seem longer and the cartoon cinematics make a wonderful return. My one gripe with them though is they’re not as impressive as the ones in Curious Village with the big exception of the finale.

    Some of the puzzles can be very difficult to work out and the hint system in the game isn’t as useful on some puzzles than on others with one puzzle offering trivia instead of hints (based on the style of puzzles though it was understandable). The whole tea making side quest seemed a little out of place. Brew the different types of tea with the different ingredients was a matter of trial and error which seems really out of place and tedious in a puzzle game.

    Few bad points aside the game was great, nothing really that new gameplay wise from the last game but the style of game means it doesn’t get old. It’s a style that works and it works well. I’m looking forward to the third game, Professor Layton and the Last Time Travel. I also look forward to the feature length film, Professor Layton and the Eternal Diva.

    Five Guys and a Game


    2009 - 10.09

    On tuesday this week we were told that by the end of our Games Development lecture on tuesday next week we would be in groups. This group will stick together for the full year and build part of a game together. This game is up to us to design, build and test. We were told that we should try and find our own groups before the lecture otherwise we’d all end up getting grouped by the lecturer.

    Me and Shaun decided we wouldn’t wait until Tuesday and went looking on the board. We were joined by Patrick, someone Shaun knew from first year and we posted on a topic made by a programmer which had another reply from someone else. We posted my email address and both of them got in touch ^__^

    We arranged a meeting for today and we got to meet them in person. They both agreed to join us and we talked through an idea I came up with for a game which we’ll be making. Jobs were assigned I’m Game Designer, Story Writer and Level Designer WOOP!

    The team now stands at: Me, Shaun, Patrick, Tom and Den.

    Patrick, Tom and Den all seem like nice guys and Den (the programmer) seems funny and whimsical. We have an intersting idea (if I do say so myself). This should be a fun module.

    Return to University


    2009 - 10.06

    Well today was my first day back at university and it was pretty much what I thought it was going to be like. First thing I did was go to Middlesbrough Tower and got my car registered for parking. I then went to Oasis and got myself a super cheap A4 sketch book. I headed up to my usual computer room and sat down to do some more of my project work only to discover I’d left my USB stick at home ¬__¬

    Shaun arrived and told me his idea for earning money after we graduate. It was actually a good idea, he really has found a hole in the market we could make use of. I was surprised.  The Games Development lecture was interesting in a number of ways. Firstly we only recognised about a handful of people in the whole lecture hall. A new lecturer was introduced and he explained how the module would work. He then told us that by the end of next weeks lectures we would all be in ours groups. They’re really not wasting any time here.

    After lecture we went shopping for supplies and I picked up a copy of Professor Layton and Pandora’s Box for the DS. It’s great, I’ll do a review later.

    Now I’m sitting at home scouring the school of computing forums to see what Games Development group requests are popping up.

    Waiting Day


    2009 - 10.05

    Well today can pretty much be summed up with the word “waiting”. Early morning I woke up an hour before my alarm was set to get me up and entered into a weird semi-sleep state. I’d drift off, have a short dream and wake up to find on a minute or two had passed. This lasted for the full hour until my alarm did it’s job. I rolled my ass out of bed, got ready and drove my car to the garage for an oil change and to get the boot lock fixed.

    Going home required the use of public transport and I was forced to use a bus for the first time in who knows when. I’m spoilt with my car. I then sat at home and waited for the call. Seven hours later I phoned them to find out what the heel was going on. They said they’d be done in an hour and in less than that I was waiting for another bus.

    The oil has been change although I can’t tell any difference and the boot now opens. Woo! It’s about time. It didn’t cost as much as we all thought it would so that was good. The rest of the day was wasted in my usual manner.

    Tomorrow marks my return to uni and the official start of my final year. The first lecture (and only one for tomorrow) is Games Development. The module in which we must make a game in groups with people from other courses. This should be interesting. Shaun has also told me he’s thought of something we could do to earn some money after we graduate. Apparently it’s games related and it’s a hole in the market. He refuses to tell me until we meet tomorrow so he can show me the research. I don’t know whether I should be worried about this or not. I guess I’ll find out tomorrow.
