    Film Review: Inglourious Basterds

    2009 - 10.03

I finally got to see this film thanks to the Arc showing films a week or two after they stop showing in mainstream cinemas. We sat in our seats, Ruth talked and I could hear people sniggering from the other side of the room. We were treat to a stupidly long reel of adverts which then ended and nothing happened. On screen anyways, an old couple sat next to us asked Ruth if she could “turn the volume down”. The film finally began.

Two hours and thirty-two minutes later we got out of our seats having watched something great. Yes, great. It was well written, directed and all the actors played their roles wonderfully. Oddly the music stood out to me. I never really notice the music in films as much as other things but in this it really did. The film was full of those classic Tarantino scenes where the characters personalities clash and the writting flows wonderfully. Lt. Aldo Raine (Brad Pitt) had to be my favourite character. Almost every line he had was pure gold and his attempt at an Italian accent had me giggling away.

The action scenes, while not as frequent as Tarantinos other works, was up to his usual level of gore. As usual he didn’t shy away from letting the audience see the violence in all it’s detail. The previously mention old couple had a habit of gasping and cringing during these moments which makes me suspect they had no idea exactly what it was they were going to see. It made me giggle.

All in all it was a great film and I’m very glad I got to see it.

Some Days You Do Nothing But Plan

    2009 - 10.02

That’s pretty much all I did today. Plan for my car going in on Monday. Plan for going to the Arc tomorrow. Plan for sorting out university parking as soon as possible.

The only thing I didn’t plan on today was an email from a lecturer telling us about a piece of work they want us to do before we go back. We had to draw and colour a picture of either our European star sign or our Chinese year sign. It was a choice between a snake or two fish. I picked both. Why the hell not?

Unfortunately the scanner messes the colours up a bit. It’s better on paper.

    The Old Man Taxi

    2009 - 10.01

The title is of this post is pretty much what I spent my time being today. My dad needed to be in hospital today and needed someone to come collect him once he was done. With Simon working and Mam away at…..something, the job was left to me. There’s a couple of things I want to note about the hospital.

First is the parking. Seriously have any of you seen the pay for parking at that place? You have to do some stupid thing with a ticket and the first 10 minutes are free but we spent so long finding were my dad was meant to go we went over the limit but the paying machine still said I didn’t have to pay. It would seem odd that I’m complaining about free parking but the whole system was confusing and the signs explaining don’t actually explain properly. Then, just when you think you’ve figured it out the damn thing doesn’t do what you expect. Bah! I say. Bah!

The second thing is that the hospital is a maze. We went to one reception and was told to go to another. A nice but chatty lady then showed us to the part of the hospital my dad needed to be at. The walk took a good 5-10 minutes through the bowls of the hospital. This walk included going down a flight of steps on the ground floor only to come out ON THE GROUND FLOOR. When we finally got to the third reception desk that my dad needed to be at we learned from the chatty lady that there was a door leading outside of the hospital less than 10 meters away from the desk. The door led out to the back of the hospital which had another FREE car park.

The last thing I want to note is doctor who talked to my dad when he was discharged. He had a hairy back. A very hairy back. It was clearly poking out the the back of his shirt collar. Ew, just ew.
